Contest Success for Wythall Radio Club

January 08, 2016 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Contest, Fun, News

Wythall Radio Club members are celebrating today following the release of the latest set of contest results.

Club members recently took part in the RSGB’s Club Calls Contest (November last year) and the results show that Wythall RC has finished in 2nd place, after a few years finishing 3rd.Certificate

Our congratulations go to the winners, Bristol Contest Group, who are a very hard act to beat, but with our team of “ordinary” club members pulling together, we managed what we consider to be an excellent result.

However, the results also show that we are the top non-contest club in the country in this event, something of which we are very proud. Pictured is our hard-earned certificate.

Our thanks go especially to our Club Calls Contest co-ordinator Dave G3YXM who whips us into shape each year for our regular assault on the event.

Perhaps next year, we can steal the top spot!

The Key to Success?

January 06, 2016 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Fun, News, Training

We hope it will be, for the key in question is Wythall Radio Club’s brand new Morse Paddle Key. IMG_0686

For some time now, our More Code training class, ably led by the “Two Johns” M6KET & G4OJL, have been short of their own twin paddle key.  No longer!

IMG_0681Last night at the club, Chairwoman Anita 2E0DUO presented the class with a brand new Kent key, with help from our friends at Martin Lynch & Sons.

John Bevan G4OJL received the key on behalf of the group saying, “This is a fantastic addition to our class – it allows us to start teaching members how to use paddle keys more effectively. Thanks to the Club Committee for OK-ing the purchase so quickly.”

Wythall Radio Club’s  Morse Class has been running now for around 5 years and remains very popular with members. If you are interested in taking part, why not contact John M6KET by contacting him at john (at) johndaws (dot) plus (dot) com? Meantime, click on the photos for a better look at our new baby!

Christmas Foxhunting…

December 27, 2015 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Fun, News

…but not the illegal kind of course, but the Wythall Radio Club Christmas RF Foxhunt!

Today’s order of events went something like this…

Winners Juliet M6RSC & David G7IBO with the M0GJM Memorial Trophy

Five teams of club members met up this morning at the Barley Mow pub in Studley. Team Steve 2E0SDD and Stacey M6STJ went off to hide as the first “fox” and after a few transmissions were hunted down by the trio of Phil 2E0WTH, Dave M0IFT & Jon M0JMM

In accordance with the rules, they then became the second fox but decided to go VERY close to the edge of the designated area – it took 5 overs before Stu M0NYP discovered them. He in turn became fox 3 but was found after just one transmission by husband and wife team Juliet M6RSC and David G7IBO.

They then became the final fox and chose to hide on a supermarket carpark in Alcester – there is a rumour this was so Juliet could do some shopping… Hmmmmm…. A nicely rounded morning’s fun was ended by the original foxes becoming the finders – Steve 2E0SDD and Stacey M6STJ

Most Wythall events end with food, so no surprises that the participants retired to the Barley Mow for lunch and a drink. It was there that the M0GJM Memorial Trophy was presented to Juliet M6RSC and David G7IBO as the worthy 2015 overall winners!

Having fun with RF again? Sounds like a good club motto!

G15YOTA visits Wythall

December 22, 2015 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Fun, News

Wythall Radio Club has been playing host to an international special event callsign today. Jamie

YOTAG15YOTA is the special callsign for Youth On The Air and is active throughout December. And today, our star 15-year-old, Jamie 2E0SDV has been operating it solo while under supervision from the club shack.

If you worked G15YOTA today, you will have spoken with Jamie, who is using the club’s Kenwood TS-590S.

Spare a thought for the young lad though; with no voice recorder, he’s been calling CQ in person all day! Perhaps our friends at Kenwood UK can sort us out a VGS-3 voice board to help Jamie out in future?

Christmas Contest Time Approaches

Mike

Mike G4VPD won the Open section last year

It is that special time of year again, when the airwaves around Wythall (and a bit further afield too!) will be full of stations exchanging numbers. No, it’s not a spy extravaganza, it’s just the Wythall Radio Club Christmas Contest again!

Members are encouraged to work each other as often as possible between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day.

Adjudicator Lee G0MTN presents Jim 2E0BLP with the 2m FM Trophy

Jim 2E0BLP won the FM Trophy in 2014

The rules are a little difficult to explain here, but fret not, as contest supremo Lee G0MTN is on hand tonight to help out.

Pop down to the shack at 20:30 to hear Lee’s latest Contest Update – there will doubtless be a few tweaks to enhance the event – it is all about “having fun with RF” as our club motto states, and it invariably lives up to its name.

The usual place of course, Wythall House, B47 6LZ. It’s the place to be on Tuesday nights!

Party Time once again!

December 10, 2015 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Fun, News

This Saturday, 12th December, is a very special date in Wythall Radio Club’s Calendar. It is the date for our annual Christmas Party. Party

Members come along, bringing friends & family and anyone who is a friend of the club, and we basically just have a lot of fun together!

We hire one of the larger rooms (with bar, of course!) at Wythall House and have a mixture of excellent food and drink (in the “American Supper” style), live entertainment, games, raffles, and even a skittle alley!

Great chat, a relaxed friendly atmosphere and a “no pressure” environment, it’s the perfect way to start the festive season off with friends.

This Saturday in the Britannia Room at Wythall House, Silver Street, Wythall from 19:30.
