Testing Times at Friday Morning Club!

August 21, 2026 By: Chris G3YHF Category: Club, Fun, News

All good things come in threes.

In this case, three telescopic HF antennas at Wythall Radio Club’s Friday morning session.

David G7IBO, Ian M0LQY and Chris G3YHF looked puzzled.  Why was one shorter?

It didn’t need an antenna analyser to work this out.  Just lack of muscle power in pulling out all the elements!

Fully extended, the antennas had very low SWR on 20 meters.

Neil G1TZC’s antenna analyser helped us establish how far the elements needed to be retracted to resonate on the HF bands above 20 meters.

All conducted from the picnic tables outside our HQ at Wythall House with the aid of Alan G6VXN.

Sadly, the HF bands were poor due to the recent solar flare.

So neither Phil 2E0WTH’s QRP LARC BIT40 kit radio nor Chris G3YHF’s 20 watts of FT857 nor Mike G4VPD’s CW produced any contacts.
