Christmas Contest Cartoon

February 21, 2017 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Contest, Fun, News

For regular followers of the Wythall Radio Club Christmas Contest, you will know that Stu M0NYP produces an annual cartoon to capture the essence of the event.

2016/17 is no exception and here it is!

Normally Stu gets it out in time for the results evening but due to circumstances beyond his control, it has only just been completed.

Click on the image to see it in its full glory… and enjoy!

For the results, check out the earlier post on this website here.

And the results are in!

February 09, 2017 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Contest, Fun, News

We finally have the long-awaited results of the the Wythall Christmas Contest, and it’s great news for both a first time winner and a contest stalwart!

Kevin 2E0NCO’s persistence and stickability proved far too hard for anyone to beat – he finished top of the FM section (and in fact top overall, which is quite an achievement!)

David G7IBO, the reigning all-mode champion repeated his 2015/16 success to win the G7OJO trophy for the second year in a row. That after many years trying to be a winner!

Thanks to our Contest Team, especially Lee G0MTN, for the seemingly increasingly hard work involved in putting the event on and adjudicating it.

It won’t be long either before Wythall Radio Club members are at it again – our Easter Contest is coming up soon with Eggs as prizes! Watch this space!

Results Night!

February 01, 2017 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Contest, Fun, News

Ian M0IDR won the 2m trophy last year, but what about 2017?

This coming Tuesday at Wythall Radio Club is one of the most eagerly anticipated of our year – the Christmas Contest Results Night!

Every year, from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day, we have a fest of contacts between club members on as many local bands as we can muster.

The event is hotly contested and though its primary function to encourage members to have fun with RF, it can occasionally get just more than a little competitive!

As usual there are two trophies up for grabs, the G7OJO trophy for the overall winner on all bands and the FM Trophy for the winner of the 2m/70cms FM only section.

Adjudicator Lee G0MTN has all the results ready, so roll with us this Tuesday 7th Feb in the Club Shack at Wythall House, Silver Street. B47 6LZ

WRC Christmas Contest starts soon!

December 10, 2016 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Contest, Fun, News

It will soon be that special time of year again, when the airwaves around Wythall (and a bit further afield too!) will be full of stations exchanging numbers.

David G7IBO won the contest for the first time last year

No it’s not a spy extravaganza, it’s just the Wythall Radio Club Christmas Contest again!
Members are encouraged to work each other as often as possible between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day.

The rules are a little difficult to explain here, but fret not, as contest supremo Lee G0MTN is on hand this Tuesday to help out.

Pop down to the Committee Meeting in the shack at 20:30 and once it is over, you can catch up with Lee’s latest Contest Update – there will doubtless be a few tweaks to enhance the event – it is all about “having fun with RF” as our club motto states, and it invariably lives up to its name.

The usual place of course, Wythall House, B47 6LZ.

Lee G0MTN operating G4WAC/P through the night

Cast your mind back a few weeks and you will recall that members of Wythall Radio Club were out have fun with RF on the field at Wythall Park.

As part of our annual BBQ and Field Day, we also put in an entry for the RSGB Islands on the Air contest.

Well the provisional results are out and it’s good news all round!

Our club station G4WAC finished 3rd in the mixed mode Low Power section, while Jamie 2E0SDV, our 16 year old member, looks like finishing 2nd in the SSB assisted High Power section, while operating as MS0YHC from the Orkneys.

Certificates all round then, we hope. We should tip the hat in the direction of Stan & Lee who pretty much ran the station for the full 24 hours. Well done, guys!

M0JMM Plug ‘n’ Playing…

Before the British Summer comes to an end, the members of Wythall Radio Club are planning a day outside!

This Sunday we will be on the field at Wythall Park from 09:30 onwards having what we call a “Plug ‘n’ Play Day”.

This is where we invite you to bring along your portable set-ups to try out, test a new aerial if you like, or get some advice from some of our most experienced operators…

With HF and 2m contests on over the weekend, there will be plenty of stations to work. So why not charge up that old FT-817 or dig out your vintage gear or maybe bring your home-built QRP rig and join us?

Look for us behind the Scout Hut near the Rugby pitch at Wythall House B47 6LZ. The weather is set fair so it should be fun!

Fun in the Field!

August 01, 2016 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Contest, Fun, News

This weekend saw members of Wythall Radio Club taking to the field once again!

We are very fortunate at our meeting place, Wythall House, to have access to the private park, which makes a great place to do some outdoor radio.

Combine this with our legendary love of food(!) and a club BBQ and you have the ingredients for one fun weekend.

With the weather staying fair and dry, a good time was had by all, as can be seen from the photos below.

For those who were there, enjoy reliving the fun – for those that weren’t, there’s always next year…

Islands on the Air!

The club tower in the field last year

This weekend, 30th & 31st July, Wythall Radio Club are taking to the field – to take part in the “Islands on the Air” radio contest.

IOTA, as it is known, is the Radio Society of Great Britain’s largest competitive event – and since the UK is an island, we get to be a multiplier for the contest!

Normally, we take part in VHF Field Day for our annual outdoor radio event and club barbecue, but this year, we thought we would try something different and join in with an HF contest instead.

We will be on Wythall Park fields all weekend (it’s a 24 hour event!) with our trailer tower and hopefully the bands will be humming with both voice and morse code transmissions.

We will set our sights high and see how we get on. Who knows? If it is successful, we might even repeat it next year!

Field Day – not in a Field!

July 08, 2016 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Contest, Fun, News

Last weekend was VHF Field Day here in the UK – and for a change, Wythall Radio Club decided to do it from the club shack!

9 members and visitors activated the club callsigns and made plenty of contacts.VHFNFD

It was particularly pleasing to see some folk who wouldn’t probably consider themselves contesters taking part and getting some operating experience.

Phil WTH and Roy HDF in particular took up the mic and worked a few stations. Even more nerve-wracking than usual with a few onlookers!

Conditions on VHF/UHF were not inspiring – no signs of any E’s or tropo, and online we could see that many other groups had showers and storms. Best DX on 2m was to France.

There was a break for a fish and chip (or kebab) dinner, where 2016 NFD will go down in history as “Curry-Sauce-Gate”. Don’t ask – especially don’t ask Pete M5DUO!

We will be out in the field soon though – IOTA weekend at the end of July is our big event this year – and of course there will be the annual club BBQ! Yum yum!
