August 20, 2017 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, News, Training

More excellent news from the Wythall Radio Club training team.

Yesterday Barry Garrison passed his Intermediate Licence at an exam at the club.

Barry says he is now keen to start on the Advanced course which we are starting at the club soon.

All at WRC congratulate Barry on an excellent result and look forward to hearing more good news from him in December after the Advanced Exam.

We are very pleased to announce that Wythall Radio Club will be running our annual Advanced License Course at Wythall House this autumn.

Classes will begin on Monday 4th September 2017. The 15 week course is delivered in the club shack on Monday evenings from 8.00pm – 10.00pm, though you should note that there is a Saturday morning requirement scheduled for 25th November.

The actual Advanced Examination is scheduled for Saturday 9th December at 1.00pm.

The total cost of the course is £60. This includes the official course book, course materials, exam fees and all admin costs.

If you are an Intermediate Licence holder and you are interested in doing this course, please contact Wythall Radio Club’s Training Co-ordinator, Chris G0EYO at g0eyo@blueyonder.co.uk as soon as possible. There is also more information on training available here.

Five Gain Their Intermediate Licence

July 04, 2017 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, News, Training

It could be the title of an Enid Blyton book, but it’s actually the latest fantastic news from Wythall Radio Club’s Training Team!

After weeks of studying, all five candidates sat their Intermediate Exam at the Club last night. And it was great to hear that all five passed with flying colours.

So it’s congratulations from everyone at WRC to (from left to right in the photo) Jonathan M6JHX, Stuart M6HVF, Jonathan M6ITQ, Stuart M6SUD and Mike M6ILX, who will now all be upgrading their callsigns to 2E0 prefixes, just as soon as Ofcom let them!

Our thanks to all our Training Team, Invigilators and Tutors.

We now hope that these five will join our autumn Advanced course and go on to achieve the highest licensing level in the hobby.

Morse Maestro

July 03, 2017 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Fun, News, Training

Wythall Radio Club member Jamie M0SDV is celebrating today.

He has been crowned the winner of this year’s Lew Williams Shield award.

Each May, we designate the month as our Morse Activity month and members are invited to show evidence of progress in learning and/or using the Code in the Radio hobby.

This year Jamie, (who is still only 16, even though he is tall!) was nominated the winner by the judging panel. This comes hot on the heels of him recently gaining his Full licence callsign a few months ago.

It’s been an exciting few weeks for the young man, who is pictured here at last weekend’s Field Day and BBQ, receiving his awards from judge Lee G0MTN.

Well done Jamie, from everyone at WRC!

Some good news this morning at Wythall Radio Club. One of our youngest members has gained his Advanced callsign.

16-year-old Jamie has been a member of Wythall Radio Club for a few years, starting with his Foundation Licence and then gaining his Intermediate quite soon afterwards.

The great news is he has just passed his Advanced exam and gained the full licence privileges that this gives.

We are looking forward to hearing his new callsign on the air soon, complete with the full 400 Watts of power!

Well done Jamie, from all of us at WRC.

More Foundation Successes

Neal, Andy & Matt show off their pass certificates today

Wythall Radio Club’s training team are reporting yet more successes today.

Following our latest Online Foundation Course, we are pleased to announce we have 3 new members of the Amateur Radio fraternity.

We extend a congratulations and warm welcome to the hobby to Neal, Andy and Matt.

They completed their practical assessments yesterday and the final exam this lunchtime at the club – this was following a few weeks of online tuition from Chris G0EYO and our Training team.

We wish them all the best in the hobby and we look forward to seeing them at the club soon!

May = Morse

April 30, 2017 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, Contest, Fun, News, Training

It’s that time of year again! Wythall Radio Club has an annual initiative during the month of May to appreciate Morse Code (CW), in memory of past club president and long-time CW teacher, Lew Williams.

Kev G4XLO won the shield in 2016

During the month we encourage all in the club to either a) have a first go at learning the code or b) improve on your rusty skills. :)

At the end of May we collect reports and anecdotes for how members have used, or learned the mode during the month. Sometimes people nominate themselves, other send reports in about other members’ achievements.

At the end of the month we have a presentation and summary of the reports received, and award the Lew Williams Shield to the club member who it’s felt has shown the most progression.

It’s often easier for new learners to do well in this event, so why not have a go at learning and using Morse Code?

Five pass their Foundation!

Enid Blyton would be proud! Thanks to the Wythall Radio Club Training Team, there are 5 new entrants to our wonderful hobby today.

Our online Foundation Course is very popular these days and attracts people from all around the East and West Midlands.

Congratulations from the whole club then go to (left to right in the photo) David from Stratford-upon-Avon, Ian from Warwick (at rear), Ben (aged 10) from Swadlincote in Derbyshire and Kim from Stratford-upon-Avon. (Sadly Carl from Redditch is not pictured)

Our thanks as always to our training team and invigilators.

We are now looking towards May 13th & 14th when three more online Foundation students will be taking their practical assessments and examination. Watch this space!

3 new Foundation Licensees

February 28, 2017 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, News, Training

Barry, Marian & Stuart are now awaiting their shiny new callsigns!

Following a successful Foundation Licence Course run by the Wythall Radio Club Training Department, we now have three new entrants to the hobby.

Our congratulations to Barry Garrison, Marian Tonge & Stuart Griffiths. Our commiserations also go to Ed Smith, who was just one mark off passing the exam, held last night at the Club. A re-take should solve that though and then Ed can join his colleagues with their new callsigns.

Our thanks to Wythall Club members, Chris G0EYO, Roger M0GWM, Peter G4LWF, John G4OJL, Dave G3YXM and David G0ICJ for running the course & exam.

Perhaps our new licensees will be thinking of joining our next Intermediate Course, starting soon? Watch this space!

Online Foundation Course Announced

February 07, 2017 By: Chris G7DDN Category: Club, News, Training

Wythall Radio Club are pleased to announce that we will soon be running an on-line course for those seeking to gain their Foundation Amateur Radio licence.

This might be ideal for younger students or perhaps those who cannot make a regular evening on our normal teaching nights.

With the online course, students can study in their own time with support from tutors.

The course will start on the 13th March and should be finished by 14th April.

Please note that there are a series of practical assessments which require your attendance at a registered centre – if you live in the West Midlands, then Wythall Radio Club will be organising a Practical Assessments workshop on Saturday 29th April, with a Foundation examination on Sunday 30th April.

More information is available on our training page or contact the Training Coordinator, Chris G0EYO via email at g0eyo(at)blueyonder.co.uk
